#126  Sailing to Sunrise, acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20

This is an homage to Sydney Laurence’s “Early Morning Juneau,” using my sailboat as the boat in the picture. Thanks to Steve Parker for the photo of my boat, taken from his boat during our participation in the sailing club’s Admiralty Rally this summer, that I used as the model for the painting.

I have taken liberties with the reality of Juneau light and shadow (and other things) in order to make the painting work to my vision, but it has been a fun summer constantly returning to the place we thought Laurence may have painted from to view the light at different times of morning and in different conditions. The first start of a study for this was done in the field with the Plein Rein Painters May 19.

Beautifully Adorned Face and Trails above Each Other,
oil on canvas, 15.5 x 30 (16.75 x 31.25 framed)

I painted from life down on the flatlands in Douglas from May- September.  One layer was effaced due to the rain.  It was painted in small increments until after an informal critique with the plein rein painters, which quickened the speed of finishing the piece greatly.  Colors, brush strokes, and light are based on observation; however, the work evolved into being more about the act of painting than what is depicted.

I painted Early Morning Juneau from the shore at Douglas, near the edge water condos; the Silent Pool was standing at the sidewalk looking towards Auke Lake; Bend in the River was off the airport dike trail and Gastineau Channel was from 3.5 mile across from the Juneau Empire.
