Paintings for Exhibit and Calendar #2- # 107 - 109

Paintings for Exhibit & Calendar #2

Patti Hutchens Jouppi  (her website)

#107  Auke Lillies - Oil on Canvas,  24 X 36 unframed

Vantage Point Looking Northwest from just off shore of UAS, Lilly Pads were near walkway.  I used a paddle board to investigate the perspective from around the entire lake and began initial drawing from the site that matched most closely.  I deduced Sydney Laurence was not near the bridge because that area had  been logged at the time.  Under painting was done from bike path just after fog had lifted late in the day. Inspired by Silent Pool, Sydney Laurence

#108  Woodchopper On The Bar  - Oil on Canvas, 12 X 24  unframed

Vantage Point looking south at end Boy Scout Beach trail during low tide.  I used the spot on the Eagle/Herbert Bar where Sydney Laurence spent time.  I used my husband for a model while at Amalga Residency. The painting, outside of smoke and finishing touches on model, was done en plein air.

#109 Eagle River - Oil on Canvas, 12 X 30 unframed

Vantage Point looking south to Eagle Glacier from river bank near the parking lot for Boy Scout Beach hiking trail. ( This spot is near where the old horse tram that ran from Eagle Landing at Amalga to Eagle River ended and the old river bed of Herbert would have come from right.  There is a photo of Sydney standing at this spot, however in 1904 this area was clear cut all the way to the glacier which is  seen only through the trees now. Laurence's exact perspective cannot be matched without  standing in the swamp now. I actually triangulated Laurences exact angle from our boat and then worked toward the river bank where I believe he stood for his painting.

ON LOCATION WITH SYDNEY LAURENCE:
THE PAINTINGS FROM THE SUMMER of 2018

The Juneau Plein Rein Painters worked during 2018 to create plein air paintings from approximately the same vantage points (in Juneau locations) that Sydney Laurence used, in a style and media personal to each artist. We will exhibit the paintings at the Juneau Douglas City Museum December 7 - 28, 2018.

Images for consideration in the exhibit are displayed here and will be posted as they are submitted. We are numbering them sequentially to help us with identification.

On Location with Sydney Laurence Sept. 2018

The Juneau Plein Rein Painters have spent the summer of 2018 painting around Juneau in the locations Sydney Laurence painted plein air in the 1920s-1930s.  The paintings created  will be curated for an exhibit at the Juneau Douglas City Museum, opening Friday, December 7, 2018.  12 of the images will be selected for the annual Plein Rein Calendar 2019. We will be posting the images here in the coming weeks.
